About 500AI

A map of who matters in AI, why they matter, and where to start.

500AI is not trying to be a generic paper search engine or a clone of Google Scholar. It is an editorial map of the AI researcher landscape, built to help people quickly understand the researchers, labs, topics, and starting points that define the field.

The job of the site is simple: help a curious person go from vague awareness to a useful mental map. That means combining judgment, structure, and source-backed evidence instead of dumping raw metadata.

How Pages Are Built

Every profile is a merge of three layers: stable identity data, generated evidence, and editorial interpretation.

Identity covers names, aliases, and basic links. Generated evidence pulls from recurring source material, profile link structure, and public enrichment where available. Editorial work adds the “why this person matters” layer that raw metadata cannot provide.

Topic and lab pages are then built from the graph created by those profiles: shared source material, recurring institutions, related entities, and the strongest researcher dossiers in each cluster.

Selection Criteria

  • Substantial contributions to AI research, tooling, or systems that changed how the field works.
  • High-signal work at important labs, universities, open-source ecosystems, or independent research groups.
  • Clear field impact: new methods, influential papers, defining infrastructure, or durable research agendas.
  • Useful explanatory value: researchers worth understanding if you want to map a topic, lab, or model family.

Source Model

Profiles are anchored by canonical papers, project pages, personal sites, repositories, and public researcher metadata. The site also uses public enrichment from sources such as ORCID and OpenAlex when a high-confidence match exists.

Source-backed does not mean source-dumped. 500AI intentionally filters and summarizes so that the page answers a human question: why should I care about this person or area, and where should I start?

What 500AI Is Not

  • Not a complete bibliography for every researcher.
  • Not a generic paper database or citation tracker.
  • Not a neutral “list of everyone” with no judgment or structure.
  • Not a replacement for reading papers, lab blogs, or original source material.
